CONDITIONS eye lens is very sharp effect on vision. If the cloudy eye lens, the image is captured is not clear. Cataracts are changes in the previous lens clear and translucent to opaque, so that the image produced on the retina of the eye becomes blurred.
One important thing to note is that cataracts can be cured. The operation is the most appropriate way to deal with cataracts. The problem in Indonesia is still an imbalance between the number of cataract patients with cataract surgery. “So much the number of cataract patients who still had not healed,” said Dr. Jusuf Wijaya SpM from Taruma Royal Hospital, West Jakarta.
Symptoms and Causes
The process of cataract usually occurs gradually, so that people have often complained of decreased vision acuity. Symptoms include cataracts generally obscure vision as the fog that blocks the object, are sensitive to sunlight, sometimes the vision in one eye in two or double, if you want to read, the patient must take the light and the eye lens become opaque as glass of milk. “Changes sharp vision is blurred to make people who experience the disorder often change the size of the glass eye,” said Dr. Joseph.
Visual impairment in people with cataract depends on the location of the eye lens opacities. If the cataract is on the edge of the lens or not lies in the center of the lens, the patient does not feel any vision problems. “If there is unrest in the center of the lens, sharp vision will be disturbed,” he continued.
Most cataracts occur because degeratif process that generally occurs in the elderly aged 60 years and over. However, cataracts can also occur in infants with cataracts kongelital called because the mother has been infected at the early stages of pregnancy. Cataracts also occur in those who have myopia or nearsightedness. And this can happen at a younger age. “That’s because the process that occurs in degeratif lens myopia eyes faster,” he said.
Cataracts can also be caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM) or diabetes, the use of certain medications, especially steroids in high doses and long periods of time, the eyes are exposed to sunlight (UV) in a long time without any protection, too often smoking, and consuming alcohol. “Cataracts also occur because the person had to do surgery, trauma or injury to the eye, and can also ignorance of one’s ignorance as decreased visual acuity and not to the ophthalmologist to check her eyes,” he explained.
Medical
The only way to deal with cataracts is surgery. That is the most appropriate way. In the past, a new cataract surgery when it is said is ripe or lens opacities is full. On the condition of course that person is already experiencing blindness. Not anymore. Since early cataracts were known already inoperable. “That way, patients avoid the blindness that could have been prevented,” he said.
Today, cataract surgery techniques have used a modern tool called phacaoemulsification. With this tool, doctors could do penyerpian lens in the eye of those with cataract and suction serpian-serpian lens. Incision is made very minimal, which is about 2 mm only, so only a local anesthetic used (in the form of eye drops). Sayatannya wound did not need stitches. “When surgery becomes shorter and after surgery patients can return normal activity,” he said.
In the operation phase, cloudy lens is destroyed and removed. After that included a replacement lens or Artifical Intraocular Lens (IOL). When ITU IOL has been experiencing rapid development. In the past, commonly used IOL is the type of standard lens nonaspheric. Shortcomings that can be corrected with the aspheric lenses have the property yangn reduce the bias that the quality of vision for the better, “he explained.
There was also a multifocal lens which also serves to correct the vision far and near, so the patient after surgery is expected to be free from glasses. There is also a Toric lens capable of correcting the eye cylinder. “The selection of lenses that can be tailored to the needs of patients,” he said.
Prevention
There are several ways to prevent cataracts, among others, to avoid exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light (UV) directly by wearing dark glasses. Why? Because ultraviolet rays can cause the formation of cataracts.
Another way is to consume nutritious foods and beverages. Vegetables and fruits, like oranges, contains vitamin C which acts as antioxidants to disarm free radicals cause aging of cells, thus useful to prevent cataracts. “Wine contains proantosianidin and more powerful than vitamins C and E. Proantossianidin can improve retinal function, especially those damaged by the hemorrhage of blood vessels in the eye and blood sugar imbalances. And pineapples contain many vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, B complex, beta-carotene or pro-vitamin A, “he explained.
In addition, salmon and tuna can also help prevent cataracts. Dark meat is rich in DHA (Docosahexaenoid Acid) and contain omega-3 fatty acids which play an important role in the formation of the retina of the eye. “And for the smoking, stop smoking because of the risk-free cigarettes that produce increases the risk of cataracts. Eat a balanced nutritious diet,” he said.
